The Taste of Things (La Passion de Dodin Bouffant)

With the Oscars happening literally hours from now, I thought it appropriate to give a nod and 5 Heart Rating to this masterpiece of a movie. The Taste of Things, or La Passion de Dodin Bouffant in French, as it is a French movie with subtitles, is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I have a tendancy to be drawn to foreign films, but this one is especially good.

As a huge Juliette Binoche fan, I try to watch as much of her work as I can. Chocolat, a movie I’ve seen multiple times, remains one of my all-time favorites. She is an incredible actor and, I believe, is deserving of an Oscar for her performance in this movie though she was not nominated. And although this was France’s official submission, it did not get a nomination for Best Foreign Film either but both leads in The Taste of Things were nominated at the Cannes Festival in 2023.

You may think from the trailer that this is a “chickflick”. I and many reviews I’ve read would disagree. I’d go further to say it would make a great “date night” movie. If you do see it, please comment. I’d love to know what you think. Here’s the trailer below. Enjoy!

PS This is a great film to practice your French. Don’t go hungry. Perfect for that dinner first then a movie kind of date!
