Fish Love, Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski

“The people make a serious mistake in thinking you give to those whom you love, and the answer is, the real answer is you love those to whom you give.” ~ Rabbi Dr. Dessler

My best friend of 45 years lost her husband during the night. She called just hours ago and said these words: “I lost Bill.”

The next few minutes she said so much but I don’t recall almost any of what she said. All I could think was, “Did she just say she lost Bill? The love of her life? The person who changed my dear friend’s life by loving her in that unconditional way we hear so much about? The man whom I knew with full confidence would be there for my friend always?”

Their wedding day was one of the happiest times of my life. I could feel the love. The same feeling every time I was around them and every single time my friend spoke of her husband when we talked on the phone. I so admired their love. They’d been through a lot. Including the loss of my friend’s brother and father just in recent years. But through it all they  continued to give to each other. They gave love. They gave support. They gave strength and encouragement. They gave acceptance. They gave and gave and gave. To each other.

My hope is that although my friend’s words show the deep feeling of loss at such an unimaginable time, she also continues to feel the special love only Bill could give. Now and for all eternity.

The feature photo you see here was taken by my friend. She is an incredibly gifted photographer. There are many photos I could have used. I love this one.
