Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Chocolate dipped strawberries are a fairly new discovery. In 1960 a woman named Lorraine Lorusso combined chocolate and strawberries to create this simple yet decadent indulgence. Lorraine worked at a small gourmet store called the Stop N’ Shop in Chicago. She took the chocolate served in the store and dipped the seasons’ freshest berries into the mixture. She allowed the chocolate to harden and then served them to paying customers. The treat was an instant success.

If you have never made chocolate dipped strawberries you may be surprised just how easy they are to create. Just Google it. I have been making them for my entire adult life and even have a little story to tell about them.

I ran a very busy bed and breakfast in a small village near Albuquerque, New Mexico. The inn prided itself on doing everything possible to accommodate food allergies and sensitivities so when I heard one of my guests, a 9-year-old boy from France was allergic to just about everything you can imagine including nuts, seeds, gluten, dairy, eggs, etc., I was determined to find something special I could prepare for him. His parents, both physicians, assured me it would not be necessary to prepare anything for his breakfast as they brought a special cereal and “milk” with them. I just couldn’t serve all the other guests a gourmet spread while this sweet boy ate boring cereal.

So I made him the biggest platter of chocolate dipped strawberries you can imagine. You can also imagine his face when I set the platter down on the table right in front of him and announced they were just for him.

His name was Etienne and we became instant friends even though neither of us could speak the other’s language almost at all. I even received a letter from his parents inviting me to their home in Montpellier, France. Apparently Etienne hadn’t stopped talking about the strawberries and the crazy lady who made them.

Chocolate dipped strawberries are one of those things you can whip up in a matter of minutes but seem so complicated. I’ve served them to guests, given them as gifts, and showed a number of people how to make them. It’s a great activity to do with kids. Even little kids! Matter of fact I think I’ll go dip some strawberries now. Yum!
